Application Pack

Carlow County Council wish to support Professional Artists ( including Writers, Composers, Visual Artists etc. ) who are originally from Carlow or currently reside in Carlow, through the provision of bursaries designed to assist artists in their professional development, in the creation of art or in bringing their art to the public. Arts Act Grant 2011

Groups and Organisations

Carlow County Council wish to support professional and amateur artists ( including performing artists, visual artists, writers, composers, etc. ) who are originally from Carlow or currently reside in Carlow. This support will be facilitated through the provision of bursaries designed to assist with an artist's expenses in relation to professional development, art creation and costs incurred in bringing art to the public.


Individual Artists

The 2003 Arts Act permits a local authority to provide financial assistance in respect of such activities, for the purposes of stimulating public interest in the arts, promoting the knowledge, appreciation and practices of the arts or improving standards in the arts. Through the Arts Act Grants Carlow County Council invite applications from non profit local groups and organisations in Carlow who directly seek to achieve the following aims:

  1. To raise the standards of arts practice in their area.
  2. To promote appreciation of an artform in their area especially if that artform is under-represented vis-à-vis balanced cultural provision for the County.
  3. To proactively remove barriers which lead people in their area to be excluded from the arts or arts appreciation.

Application Pack

The application pack is applicable to both ' Groups and Organisations ' as well as individual Artists.

4pm, Friday 4th March 2011 is the closing date for applications.

Individual Artists Award 2011

Carlow County Council and Carlow Town Council wish to support Professional Artists – (including Writers, Composers and Visual Artists etc.) who are originally from Carlow or currently reside in Carlow – through the provision of bursaries designed to assist artists in their professional development, in the creation of art or in bringing their art to the public.

Under the Arts Act Grant Scheme for Individual Artists and in line with Carlow County Council’s policy, applications were invited, through advertisements in local media, from Carlow artists seeking assistance.  Independent recommendations were sought in relation to these awards and support as set out hereunder is recommended to Council for approval.

Individual's

  • Annabel Konig - Professional Photography of art work.
  • Caroline Cunningham - Professional development of Painting skills in landscape. 5 day workshop with leading artist John Dinan at Dublin Studio.
  • Robert Alexander McLean To further and complete new work in the field of painting in process now 7yrs.
  • Remco de Fouw - Work on a series of medium size sculptures with a borrowed coredrill, would like to buy one.
  • Brendan A.O. Harding - Allow time and space to write without external constraints.
  • Rosalind Murray - Financial aid towards the costs of a professional camera/sound man for my video/performance project at selected sites on the river barrow.
  • Michelle Byrne - Employ a designer to create a web-site, business cards and brochure of my sculpture work.
  • Emma Martin - Undertake a 3 week period of self-directed choreographic research and development, forming the beginning stages of a dance theatre piece to be performed later in 2011.
  • Eilish Langton - Research and Development Proposal; Art in slack spaces, Carlow.

ARTS ACTS GRANTS 2011

The 2003 Arts Act permits a local authority to provide financial assistance for the purposes of stimulating public interest in the arts, promoting the knowledge, appreciation and practices of the arts, or improving standards in the arts.  In this act, the expression “the arts” means creative or interpretative expression (traditional or contemporary) in whatever form and includes in particular visual arts, theatre, literature, music, dance, opera, film, circus and architecture.

Advertisements were placed in local newspapers inviting applications under the Arts Act Grants Scheme and Support for Artists Scheme.  Independent recommendations were sought in relation to these awards and support as set out hereunder were awarded by Council.

Group's

  • Barrow Valley Art Group - Development & hosting of the website & face book.  Training of group members in website upload. Improve group profile & promote Carlow works of art.
  • Blackstairs Film Society - Develop web presence and increase visibility at county level through advertising and increased promotional activity.
  • Carlow Storytellers Group - Monthly lunchtime theatre in the bar of GBShaw Theatre featuring song, story, drama, music and dance.
  • 9 Stones Artists - Produce a flyer for our forthcoming exhibition at Borris House. Eigse Fringe Festival
  • Patchwork Theatre Group - To provide drama workshops for people with differing abilities and to produce a play based on their creative ideas.
  • Carlow Traditional Music Folk Club - Running 6 monthly traditional Irish music concerts showcasing musicians from Ireland & abroad.
  • Carlow Youth Orchestra - To assist in the purchase of percussion instruments & a concert brass drum.
  • CRISP - Stage exhibitions of Digital Photographs taken by people who have had no previous photographic training before baking part in Digital Photography courses organised by CRISP throughout Co. Carlow.
  • Forward Steps Family Resource Centre Ltd. - 3 day film making workshop for young people to cover many aspects of film making.
  • Irish Wheelchair Association - Develop the Art the discipline of painting and pottery with new centre participant on Friday, culminating in an exhibition.
  • Carlow Photographic Society - Document life on the river barrow - portraits of people with a connection to the river.
  • Carlow Emerging Playwrights - A writing (one day) workshop blitz.
  • Leighlin Brass Band - A parish outreach activity. Teaching children to play brass instruments and socially develop in a brass band format.
  • Open Door CDP - Participate in Carlow's St. Patrick’s Day Parade i.e. decorating a float and the participants.
  • Rathanna Marching Band - Purchase of new equipment.
  • Teach Bhride - 6 week course - Community writing group.
  • BluePrint - Running exhibition.
  • Borris Festival
