2012 Art Events

Everything can be Done, in Principle

Outlined in the banditti of the plains by A.S. Mercer, ( 1894 ) a band of fifty-two cattlemen and hired gunmen invaded Johnson Country, Wyoming, in April 1892 killing and terrorizing the settlers. Through the raising of the timber and canvas roller skating rink within the gallery, Duggan’s ambitious installation transports gallery visitors through the frontier lands of Wyoming and American Western Cinema as seen in Michael Cimino’s Heavens’s Gate ( 1980 ). Duggan invites the public to participate in a public activity, to skate in costume, in the place and time of the Johnson County’s war, suggesting this trope allows Ireland of 21st century to explore notions of its social identity.

From June 9th to August 26th, 2012

Bealtaine Festival

May belonged to the Bealtaine festival, celebrating creativity in older age! Thousands of older people now take part in the Bealtaine festival, with 2011 being its 16th year. From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists. It is a chance for people to make new and challenging work, a chance to communicate traditions between the generations. It is a chance for the novice to discover a talent until then unseen and a chance for a long-dormant skill to find a new outlet. Each year, Age and Opportunity invites local authorities, arts centres, libraries, Active Retirement groups, care settings, community groups and clubs, associations from every part of the country to run Bealtaine events that celebrate creativity in older age. In 2010, we had over 500 organisers. The theme for 2011 is ' push the boat out , whatever the sea '  is taken from the poem ' At Eighty ' by Scottish poet Edwin Morgan, OBE.

Aspiro Youth Ensamble

Aspiro was formed in September 1997 by Mary Amond O’Brien. Since its formation Aspiro very quickly established itself as a unique and ambitious choir, promoting a world class model for choral music education practice in Ireland. It offers a musical education of the highest artistic standards through the medium of choral music for interested young people in Carlow and surrounding counties.

Today Aspiro incorporates four ensembles – Aspiro Junior, Aspiro Girls, Aspiro Male Voice Squad and Aspiro Youth Ensemble – engaging its members, male and female age 7+, in diverse choral music programmes of exemplary artistic quality. As a performance group Aspiro continues to push the boundaries of choral music beyond the standard repertoire and raise the standards not only of youth arts practice but arts practice in general – standards that are in no way age-related, purely factors of talent, experience, commitment and professionalism.

Believing in the innate musical potential of all young people and within a policy of equity and inclusiveness, no auditions are held for membership which makes this successful young choir unique. Since its formation over 400 children and young people have performed with the choir. As worthy ambassadors for Carlow and Ireland, Aspiro have represented their county and country on the local, national and in recent years, the international stage.
