Objectives

The economic development strategy of Carlow Local Authorities aims to promote economic development throughout County Carlow by ensuring adequate lands are zoned for industrial and commercial development, increasing existing business and promoting and attracting new investment, encouraging entrepreneurship and developing linkages between education and training providers and the business sector.

Achieving Objectives

Carlow Local Authorities will continue to promote the strength of enterprise and community self help which is reflected in every walk of life in this get-up-and-go county. It is evident in the strong business and enterprise tradition, in the standard and quality of graduates from its two third level colleges and in the people’s pride in their award winning colourful towns and villages. The following areas in particular are being targetted by the local authority.

  1. Carrying out an appraisal of all lands zoned for economic and commercial development in the county, ensuring the development and upgrading of infrastructure at these locations to support economic development and meet the needs of industry.
  2. Developing a new business park in Muinebheag. In 2000 Carlow County Council acquired 24 acres ( phase 1 ) and a further 16 acres in 2002 ( phase 2 ) for industrial and mixed use development. The Council provided the site development works and advertised the serviced sites on the market. Five new industries and businesses have now commenced and 10 new businesses are at planning stage.
  3. Developing a new business park in Tullow. This involves liasing with property owners and encouraging development of 58 acres of land in Tullow zoned for industrial development adjacent to existing business park and development of a further 70 acres elsewhere in the town for mixed use.
  4. Decentralisation. Following preparation and submission of a bid by Carlow Local Authorities, Carlow town was successful in being selected as a location for the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment companies registration office and office of the Director of Consumer Affairs.
