Carlow Town Joint Policing Committees
The Garda Siochana Act 2005 makes provision for the establishment of Joint Policing Committees. The formation of JPC's is designed to ensure a partnership approach where each of the partners can voice their own distinct perspective on how the Community 's policing needs are addressed. Joint Policing Committees will therefore operate in a manner that offers an opportunity to develop greater consultation, co-operation and accountability between Carlow Town Council and its Elected Representatives and An Garda Siochana, with the participation of the Community and Voluntary Sector, on the management of policing and crime issues.
The function of the Joint Policing Committee is as follows. To Keep under review:
- The levels and patterns of crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour in the Towns administrative area ( including the patterns and levels of misuse of alcohol and drugs )
- The factors underlying and contributing to the levels of crime, disorder and anti -social behaviour in its area.
- Advise Carlow Town Council and the Garda Siochana on how they might best perform their functions having regard to the need to do everything feasible to improve the safety and quality of life, and to prevent crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour within its administrative area.
- Arrange and host public meetings concerning matters affecting the policing of the local authority's administrative area.
- Establish, in consultation with the local Garda Superintendent, as the committee considers necsessary within specific neighbourhoods of its administrative area, local policing for/to discuss and make recommendations to the committee concerning matters that it is to keep under review under ( 1 ) above or on which it is to advise under ( 2 ) above, in so far those matters affect their neighbourhoods
- Co-ordinate the activities of local policing fora under ( 5 ) above or otherwise
